- A starfish, or sea star, belongs to the class Asteroidea within the phylum Echinodermata. While finding them in all oceans, from shallow coastlines to deep-sea environments, they are mainly characterized by their peculiar star-shaped body with five arms in most species. In some cases, the number of arms might be greater than five. The arms grow from the central disc and bear small tube feet that help in locomotion and capturing food.
STAR FISH
- Starfish are remarkable for their unique ability to regenerate lost limbs. When an arm is lost due to predation or injury, the starfish can regrow it; in fact, it can sometimes regenerate an entirely new starfish from an arm along with a fragment of the central disc. Such regenerative ability is a very important survival mechanism.
- Starfish are primarily carnivorous, and most species feed on bivalves like clams, mussels, and oysters. They use their tube feet to break open the shells of these animals, and then their stomachs extend out through their mouths and into the shell to digest soft tissues. This unusual feeding mechanism allows them to ingest prey that would otherwise be very difficult to access.
- Starfish also have water vascular systems for locomotion, feeding, and respiration. These systems function by means of pressure, causing the tube feet to work like hydraulic pumps to allow the starfish to move slowly over the sea floor.
- Starfish have important roles to play as predators and prey in the marine ecosystem. Despite their strong, spiny exterior, starfish are often susceptible to several environmental threats, including ocean acidification and loss of habitat. Conservation efforts are critical for the survival of these beautiful creatures. 🌹
